This is especially true in the latter ~10% of the game, where he spends day after agonizing day debating between the right choice and the choice he wants to make. More often than not, there will come a point in a route where Caim will simply be lost as to what to do, just letting the world keep on spinning around him. The chapter-is-a-route nature of the gameвЂ™s storytelling works so that each chapter is essentially self-contained and fine if taken on its own, but when strung together one after the other the main story gets bogged down in eroge cliches. But as the player, you know whatвЂ™s transpired is wrong. The ends depict smiling heroines, soft music plays Caim even tells himself that heвЂ™s happy with the outcome. Each side route end has a bitterness to it, not only because the main plot thread is abandoned, but also because the heroines lose something of themselves: Fione her fighting spirit, Eris her potential, Colette and Lavria their strength of self/sisterhood, and Licia her ability to command. Each heroineвЂ™s route consists of trying to solve her problems, in typical eroge fashion, but Caim is too broken to truly save anyone. In branching from the main route to go for a heroineвЂ™s, CaimВ sacrifices a bit of himself. Unfortunately that focus on characters, as well as the multi-route nature of eroge, hinders the main story in some respects. The main heroines, of course, take center stage, but the side characters, like in all August games, are nicely fleshed out. Every cast member has something to love about them, something to hate, and a mystery to solve. He is such a character on his own that when it comes time for the player to make a choice, itвЂ™s almost immersion-breaking.ДЄnd thatвЂ™s where Eustia really shines: its characterization. ItвЂ™s all these things that inform CaimвЂ™s decisions as an adult: he knocks back hard liquor for breakfast before hitting the tavern to drink while he waits for work, and generally makes nice with the girls on Prostitute Promenade while still keeping them at armвЂ™s length. The past haunts his every step as he tries to make sense of his familyвЂ™s death during the Gran Forte, even 10 years later. In living in the gaol, heвЂ™s seen just about every kind of cruelty possible-especially after he chooses the path of a hired killer to avoid becoming a male prostitute before heвЂ™s even a teenager. He comes to the player a damaged creature, and this is apparent from the outset. And since this is such a rare phenomenon in eroge, itвЂ™s even rarer that you come across one that actually feels like a story told for the characters, and not for the player.ДЄiyoku no Eustia takes this path, painting its male lead, Caim, as a man of no scruples he has been thoroughly broken by the вЂњgaolвЂќ that became his home at a young age, though he refuses to see this. The story revolves around them you are, for all intents and purposes, an observer of the story.

You are no longer making choices for вЂњyourselfвЂќ but for this character. I enjoy these types of games too, but when a developer comes along that tries to tell a story with their own characters, like a normal book would, the experience of playing an eroge changes. This, of course, is a caveat of eroge and allows for more flexible storytelling, similar to how fan fiction writers use established characters from their favorite series, with preset backgrounds and personalities and all that jazz. They just exist, the idea being that you, the player, fill in the background for them with your own so as to better вЂњself-insertвЂќ, as it were. Sure, you might have the relatable high school student or teenager in a fantasy setting, but thereвЂ™s no backstory to them. ItвЂ™s not often in eroge you play as a protagonist with their own personality, their own life. There may or may not be spoilers, IвЂ™m not sure. IвЂ™m just going to assume that you know the basic synopsis of the plot/have played the game yourself before reading this.
